HOW POLLINATORS REBUILD OUR WORLD'S ECOSYSTEM...AND HOW YOU CAN HELP THEM
In our last lesson, we discovered that plants and animals interact with each other and their environment to produce or consume energy, and to obtain nutrients to survive. Interactions like this support the nutrient cycle and energy flow, which are important in maintaining a healthy, sustainable ecosystem.
In this lesson, we are going to learn about pollinators, the resources they need to survive in their environment, and how cross-pollination is vital for ecosystem recovery and resilience. We will investigate the unique adaptations plants have to communicate with their pollinators and the reasons behind pollinator flower preferences.
This lesson will show you how you can support your local ecosystem and guide you in how to design a pollinator habitat.
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
- Know what resources plants and animals need to survive
- Explain the 2 processes of pollination and which one increases genetic diversity
- Explain how pollinators and plants have evolved in response to each other
- Understand how different flower shapes appeal to different pollinators
- Understand that pollinators “see” color differently than humans
- Research local pollinators and native plants
