Biodiversity: SYSTEMS UNDER STRAIN

“Strain” generally refers to a force or pressure that stretches, pulls, or puts heavy demands on something.

Earth’s living systems are under increasing strain.

Dynamic living systems are remarkably resilient because biodiversity gives them options. Over millions of years, ecosystems adapted to withstand the storms, floods, fires, disease, and shifting climates that shaped them.

In healthy ecosystems, when conditions change, the many relationships among plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms allow ecosystems to adjust, recover, and continue supporting life. Stable systems can absorb change, recover from disturbance, and continue functioning.

But resilience has limits.

When pressures arrive faster than ecosystems can recover, or when many pressures occur at the same time, the very processes that create resilience begin to weaken.

Today, human activities are placing unprecedented pressure on Earth’s living systems. Forests are cleared faster than they can recover. Habitats become fragmented. Wetlands disappear. Oceans warm and become more acidic. Climate patterns shift faster than many organisms can adapt.

Understanding this growing strain helps explain why adaptation is often misunderstood.

Think about your own body. A healthy body can recover from a poor night’s sleep, a strenuous workout, or a temporary illness. Moderate strain is a normal part of life. In fact, it often makes us stronger. But when challenges become too great, too frequent, or never allow time for recovery, our bodies begin to struggle. We become more vulnerable to illness. Healing takes longer. Eventually, systems that normally work together begin to falter.

Living ecosystems work much the same way. The problem is not strain itself. The problem is when strain becomes greater than a system’s ability to adapt and recover.

The evidence of strained ecosystems is all around us.

Wildfires in one region turn skies orange hundreds of miles away. In other regions, a month’s worth of rain may fall in a day, causing rivers to rise at astonishing rates and sweeping away cars and homes. In yet another region, record-breaking heat and prolonged drought may cause critical waterways to dry up, plant life to die off, and leave less of life’s most essential resource for wildlife and people alike. Less obviously, the ocean’s coral reefs bleach, mangrove forests decline, and pollinators become less abundant.

Ecosystems are networks. Disruptions rarely remain isolated. When one part is weakened, the effects ripple outward. Habitat loss leads to increased stress and energy expenditure on wildlife and other living systems; breeding is disrupted, social groups break down, vulnerability to disease increases, genetic diversity is reduced, and populations decline. These effects may not be immediately visible, but they are predictable consequences of disrupting systems that evolved to function together.

Systems don’t fail overnight. It’s a slow process. As options are lost, recovery slows, resilience diminishes, and strain increases.

It is the breakdown of a living system.

For wildlife, survival depends on access to appropriate habitats, freedom of movement and migration, predictable environmental patterns, and functioning food webs. When these conditions are disrupted, wildlife cannot simply move somewhere else. Their survival depends on specific ecological relationships.

This is why robust biodiversity matters so profoundly. Biodiversity is not simply a collection of species. It is the source of resilience. Every species contributes to relationships that have developed over millions of years. Together, these vital interactions allow ecosystems to pollinate plants, recycle nutrients, regulate populations, build healthy soils, purify water, store carbon, and perform many other functions upon which all life depends.

Biodiversity loss is not simply an environmental issue. It is a life-support issue.

Humans often view themselves as separate from wildlife systems. In reality, we are embedded within them. When ecosystems degrade, our food security weakens, water systems become less reliable, air quality declines, climate extremes intensify, disease transmission increases, and human communities become more vulnerable. 

They are signs that living systems are no longer functioning as they were shaped by nature to function. Eventually, the effects become impossible to ignore. 

Life persists through connection, balance, and resilience. Protecting the Earth’s biodiversity is about sustaining the living systems that make the future possible.

The encouraging news is that today’s strain does not have to be permanent. Nature is remarkably resilient when given the opportunity to recover. The same understanding that helps us recognize the signs of strain also points us toward the solutions.

The question is no longer whether living systems matter.
